Motorcycle Instructor Training/testing
The Driving Standards Agency (D.S.A) requirements are that you have to be over 21 years of age, have held a full motorcycle licence for over 3 years and be a fit and proper person, i.e. no police record or have over 6 points on your licence.
There are two types of instructor, Level 1 - being the C.B.T. Cardington Assessed, Level 2 - the D.A.S. Direct Access Cardington Assessed Instructor.
The C.B.T. Level 1 has to be completed first before moving on to the D.A.S.
The C.B.T. allows you train up to 125cc motorcycles and the D.A.S. also allows the larger bike training, for the Direct Access scheme. The C.B.T. assessment is a 2 day assessment at Cardington, Bedfordshire.
The D.A.S. is a further half day assessment at Cardington. During the 2 day C.B.T. assessment you will be assessed in both your instructual and supervisory technique by the Driving Standards Agency examiner.
At the end of the 2 days you will be given a full de-briefing in how you have achieved in your assessment. The assessment is in 5 elements:
Element 1 is in the classroom - introduction.
Element 2 is on the training pad - machine introduction.
Element 3 is on the training pad - machine riding.
Element 4 is in the classroom - practical on-road training.
Element 5 is on the road training.
Element 1 in the classroom is where you will be given a subject to talk about and teach your class on the given subject. The other students will supervise the lesson and make any comments, whether good or bad, on your teaching methods. The Driving Standards Examiner will be making notes on your lesson and marking accordingly. You will also have to assess the other students on their teaching abilities, of which you will then be assessed by the examiner on your supervisory capabilities, and marked accordingly.

Element 2 is on the training pad where you will be given a subject to teach your student and the same will happen as above.

Element 3 is on the training pad, figure of eights and U turns etc.

Element 4 is in the classroom, talking about hazzard perception, legal requirements etc.

Element 5 is on the road, where we put all the above together.

The D.A.S. course is a further half day assessment on a one to one basis with the examiner, where you will need to introduce him to the big bike i.e. difference in power ratios from the 125cc to the larger bike.
On the training pad you will be given a scenario by the examiner where he is finding the controls on the larger bike harder to deal with. You will then be asked to identify the problems and correct.
On the road you will be dealing with the handling of the larger bike, such as dual carriageways and speed. Benefits of becoming an approved Cardington Assessed Instructor.
